Youth Reading Crisis: Enjoyment and Frequency Plummet

Only 32.7% of 8-18 year-olds reported enjoying reading, a 36% drop since 2005. Daily reading fell to 18.7%. The study found that material linked to favorite films/TV shows, matching interests, engaging covers/titles, and choice significantly impacted reading motivation. Even those reporting low enjoyment recognized reading's educational value, consuming song lyrics, news, and fiction. The report suggests aligning reading with personal interests and other media to re-engage young readers.
